Waking Up - Sam Harris

"Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion" is a book by neuroscientist and philosopher Sam Harris. It was published in 2014 and blends memoir, neuroscience, and philosophy to investigate the nature of consciousness and explore the concept of spirituality without the framework of traditional religion.

"Waking Up" is Harris's call to a secular form of spirituality – one that seeks to understand and experience the deepest nature of consciousness and reality without resorting to religious belief or dogma. He presents a case that the true nature of consciousness, when deeply examined, can lead to profound insights and a meaningful sense of well-being.

Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai - Yamamoto Tsunetomo

"Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai" is a classic text from Japan, compiled in the early 18th century by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, a samurai-turned-monk. The book serves as a manual, guide, and treatise on the philosophy and code of behavior that foster the true spirit of Bushido—the Way of the Warrior.

"Hagakure," which translates to "Hidden by the Leaves" or "In the Shadow of Leaves," consists of a series of short anecdotes and reflections that together form a fascinating and intricate view of a samurai's life and code of conduct. The 1,300 aphorisms cover aspects like loyalty, honor, personal character, and the correct mindset for a samurai.

One of the most notable themes in Hagakure is the concept of living as if one is already dead. Tsunetomo believed that a samurai must be willing to die at any moment in order to be fully committed to his lord. This outlook was meant to remove any fear of death, thereby allowing the samurai to fully dedicate themselves to their duties and live with complete honesty and integrity.Other recurring themes include loyalty and obedience, a strict sense of ethics and morality, the importance of mastering one's profession, and the necessity of understanding and appreciating the fleeting nature of life.

While the teachings of Hagakure were initially intended for a feudal society's warrior class, the timeless wisdom and insights offered by the book have found relevance even in the contemporary world, particularly in fields like leadership, personal development, and decision-making.
